FACULTY BIOGRAPHIES
MELISSA BOBICK
Melissa Bobick grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and was primarily trained by James and Regina Eaton. She received additional training with such well-known teachers as Eleanor D’Antuono, Paul Sutherland, John Meehan and Cynthia Gregory. She graduated with a degree in ballet and nutrition from Indiana University in Bloomington where she studied under Violette Verdy.
From 2001 through 2007, Melissa danced with Eugene Ballet/Ballet Idaho where she was featured in such roles as Arabian in The Nutcracker, Diamonds in Sleeping Beauty, the Autumn Fairy in Cinderella and numerous contemporary works choreographed by Toni Pimble. While there, she was awarded two grants from the Idaho Commission on the Arts and subsequently was commissioned to choreograph three new works for the company. After being hired as a dancer for the National Choreographer’s Initiative in Irvine, CA, Melissa was one of four dancers engaged by New York City Opera for their new production of Cendrillon, directed and choreographed by Renaud Doucet. She was also commissioned to set a new work on the ballet majors of Belhaven College in January of 2009.
Melissa recently received her Master of Fine Arts degree in Choreography from Purchase College, Conservatory of Dance in New York. While there, she was selected as a graduate teaching and research assistant to Ms. Bettijane Sills; a former New York City Ballet soloist. Melissa was also a ballet faculty member at Ballet Hispanico. She is an ABT® certified teacher, having completed Primary through Level 3 of the ABT® National Teacher Training Curriculum. She teaches Primary and Levels 3 &4 at Huntington Center for Performing Arts.
SONIA JONES
Sonia Jones recently earned her MA in Dance Education/American Ballet Theatre (ABT) Pedagogy from New York University Steinhardt. Through this program she is an ABT®Certified Teacher who has successfully completed teacher training in Primary – Level 7 & Partnering of the National Training Curriculum®. While studying at ABT she had the privilege of working closely with Raymond Lukens of theJacquelineKennedyOnassisSchool, worked as the Education/Physical Therapy Intern and has taught in its Children’s Division. She is on faculty atHuntingtonCenterfor the Performing Arts and Covenant Ballet Theatre of Brooklyn. A Pennsylvanian, Sonia danced, choreographed and taught ballet inLancaster,PA, while earning a B.S. in Biology fromMillersvilleUniversity. She also became a Qualified Associate Teacher of Grades I –V of the Cecchetti Method of Classical Ballet during this time. Sonia danced withFranklin&MarshallCollege, danced and choreographed for the pre-professional company Ballet Theater of Lancaster under the direction of Carolyn Trythall and assisted directing its Nutcracker annually in conjunction with the Donetsk Ballet of Ukraine. Sonia is a member of CCA, CORPS de Ballet and NDEO and has attended professional development intensives through CCA, CORPS de Ballet, Mark Morris, Project Dance and NYSDEA. Currently she performs with Atmosphere Dance Company of Project Dance in addition to teaching in studio and outreach settings. She has a passion for training ballet dancers in a way that is developmentally appropriate and yet instills a love for communicating through this classical yet relevant form of dance. Sonia teaches KinderDance, Primary, Level 1 & 2 at Huntington Center for Performing Arts.
LESLIE SEEGER
Leslie Seeger received the majority of her training under Dame Sonia Arova in Birmingham and from John White and Margarita de Saa of Pennsylvania Academy of Ballet in Philadelphia. She began her professional career with the Heidelberg Ballet in Germany and went on to freelance throughout Europe with several companies including Staatstheater Karlsruhe and Dansity Amsterdam. She was also a semifinalist in the 2000 Concours de Danse de Paris.
In the US she has worked primarily with International Ballet Rotaru and The Georgia Ballet, and has been principal guest artist throughout the south and the northeast. Throughout her career she has been fortunate to have a vast experience of the classical, Balanchine, and modern repertoire. She has been teaching since the onset of her performing career and recently was certified as a teacher in American Ballet Theater’s National Training Curriculum for primary to level three. She teaches Level 3A, 3B & 4 at Huntington Center for performing Arts
ADELHEID B. STRELICK
Adelheid B. Strelick, NYU Steinhardt Dance Education M.A. alumna with a concentration in ABT Ballet Pedagogy. She graduated with the inaugural class of ABT masters students and is also an ABT® National Training Curriculum Certified Teacher. Adelheid, the daughter of a US Diplomat, born in Sri Lanka, graduated 1994 with a B.F.A. in Dance from the University of Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt, Germany. She was a dancer and award-winning choreographer for 14 years with the ballet company of the Theater Ulm, Germany. As a Soloist, she performed in Classical and Contemporary Ballets choreographed by former members of William Forsythe’s Ballett Frankfurt and others. Besides also performing in Tanz Theater, Musical, Opera, Operetta, and Theatre pieces, Adelheid also choreographed for the ballet, opera, and acting companies of the Theater Ulm, including musicals and the theater’s outreach youth programs. In 2002, the city of Ulm awarded her a prize for her c horeography “Federl(e)icht.” Adelheid’s most recent piece “In the Elevator With Philip Glass” was selected to be performed at the American College Dance Festival Association’s National Festival Gala held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC, in May 2010. She continues to work together with various choreographers and has performed in New York at the Frederick Loewe Theatre, White Wave, 92nd Street Y, The Douglas Dunn Studio, and in Chillmark, MA, at The Yard. She currently teaches all levels of study at L’Academie and classes in the Les Petits program as well as Modern Dance at Huntington Center for Performing Arts
